Prenatal chiropractic

Is it safe? When should I start? How often? Answers to the questions moms-to-be ask Dr. Moe most.

Chiropractic care offers relief from spinal, joint and other musculoskeletal problems. If you’re pregnant, you may assume treatment isn’t for you, but this is actually an ideal time to see a prenatal chiropractor. Dr. Moe Abtahi works with women throughout their pregnancies.

Is chiropractic care safe during pregnancy?

Dr. Abtahi is trained in techniques tailored to the needs of a pregnant woman’s body, to help set her up for a healthy delivery. Treatment helps your body adapt to the changes pregnancy brings, such as the shift in your center of gravity. As with any care in pregnancy, tell your obstetrician or midwife you are seeing a chiropractor.

When should I start?

Dr. Abtahi recommends beginning in the first trimester and continuing throughout your pregnancy. Adjustments and other therapies help prevent the misalignments and musculoskeletal problems that are common during pregnancy.

How does chiropractic help during pregnancy?

Seeing Dr. Abtahi regularly may help prevent neck, shoulder, back and joint pain. If you already have pain and stiffness, treatment can ease it, so you can focus on taking care of yourself and your baby.

What should I look for in a prenatal chiropractor?

Look for a chiropractor who is experienced with pregnant women. Because this is such a special time, you also want to feel comfortable with the chiropractor and find the treatment relaxing. And make sure they listen with empathy and compassion when you talk about anything that is uncomfortable.

How often should I come in?

Most women benefit from routine appointments about once a month in the first trimester, and every two to three weeks in the second and third. In the last month, Dr. Abtahi may recommend weekly visits to help prepare your body for childbirth.

Should I see a chiropractor after the baby is born?

Postnatal care may help with postpartum stiffness, pain and fatigue. Dr. Abtahi recommends waiting until you feel comfortable leaving home before resuming care.
